From the immigration records found at
www.ellisisland.org, we learned:
- Helena (Vavia) Vavra sailed on the S.S. Vanderland, leaving Antwerp,
Belgium on August 19, 1911 and arriving in New York on August 29, 1911.
- Helena was 47 years old (occupation-- housewife). She traveled with
Josefina Vavra, age 17 (occupation--servant), and her grandson, Berthold
Antalak, age 9. Their last permanent residence was listed as Kutty,
Hungary.
- Their final destination, written in a broad tipped pen which was different
than the other writing on the document, was Roxbury, Mass. The column
listing complete name and address of nearest relative or friend in country
was not filled in.
- There is a second document on which Helena and her family are listed,
"The Record of Aliens Held for Special Inquiry". They were
detained on 8/30 and admitted on 9/1. The cause for detention was
"1pc".
- A worker at Waltham______ gave us the following explanation:
The
dates and the pages refer to (1st) when the person was detained
and (2nd) when the person was released or
"admitted". The page numbers are for books the Board of
Special Inquiry wrote the names in. He said these books don't
exist. He also said the "1pc" [likely a public charge]
was very common; women were often detained until their husbands or
another responsible adult picked them up.
